Vince Gill Weighs In on the Sitting vs. Standing at Concerts Debate — and Jokes He Makes an Exception for His Crowd: ‘They’re All Old’

“Some cities are all about the energy and the party vibe,” the country star remarked.

To stand or not to stand — that’s the question.

In a recent chat with the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, Vince Gill shared his thoughts on whether concertgoers should sit or stand during his shows.

When the host mentioned attending a Tulsa concert where most of the crowd remained seated, the 67-year-old country legend joked, “Well, they’re all old.”

He went on to explain, “A lot of people spend a lot of money on those seats, and the last thing they want is someone blocking their view by standing the whole time. But there are definitely moments when everyone’s on their feet and rocking out — and that’s totally fine.”

Still, Gill pointed out that not every moment calls for a standing ovation: “When it’s time for those sweet ballads and softer songs, that’s really not the time to be up and dancing.”

But when it comes to concerts, Vince Gill knows there’s no one-size-fits-all experience. In his interview with the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, he explained how the energy of the crowd often depends on the location.

“It’s interesting how audiences vary across the country,” he said. “It really reflects the personality of the people in that area.”

The “One More Last Chance” singer elaborated: “People in the Midwest tend to be a little more polite and laid-back, not as rowdy. Then there are places that are all about cutting loose, partying, and making some noise.”

He added, “Some crowds are more reserved — you just never know what you’re going to get.”

At the end of the day, though, Gill said he’s simply grateful when fans are engaged. “When you’re on stage, all you really want is a response. That’s what matters most.”

Gill also made headlines in March for speaking out in support of Taylor Swift, who had been attending NFL games to cheer on her boyfriend, Travis Kelce. In a separate interview with the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, he said, “She’s awesome. I’m crazy about her.”

Reflecting on Taylor Swift’s early country days, Vince Gill shared a fond memory: “I did the CMA Awards with her one year. Alison Krauss, a few others, and I performed an acoustic version of her song, ‘Red.’”

He went on to say, “I’ve always been a big fan of hers, and honestly, I just laugh when people get so worked up about her going to football games.”
