Trisha Yearwood shares with PEOPLE the story behind her song Country Music HerStory as she debuts a live performance video.

Trisha Yearwood is highlighting the contributions of women in country music with her latest performance.
The 61-year-old Grammy winner, currently on tour supporting her album The Mirror, teamed up with Leslie Satcher and Bridgette Tatum for a live rendition of Country Music HerStory at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s Ford Theater last month, which PEOPLE premiered exclusively.
Released during Women’s History Month, the performance captures the trio trading vocals and strumming guitars while celebrating female trailblazers in the genre. The song pays homage to legends including Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette and Tanya Tucker.
“Leslie, Makayla and I wanted to write a song honoring the women who paved the way and continue to do so,” Yearwood told PEOPLE via email. “We aimed for a rocking Emmylou vibe, and the lyrics just poured out naturally.”
Yearwood notes that while she never met Patsy Cline personally, she has been fortunate to know and call friends many of the other women referenced in the song. “Their music has inspired me, lifted me when I was down, and paved the way for my personal heroes like Reba McEntire and Wynonna Judd,” she says.
Looking ahead, Yearwood encourages the next generation of female country artists to embrace their individuality. “Learn from those who came before you, whether it’s holding a note or deciding what songs to sing,” she advises. “But also remember that every woman is unique. Don’t be afraid to be yourself, even if no one else is doing it the way you do.”
Yearwood continues her tour, The Mirror Tour: An Acoustic Evening of Stories and Songs, performing alongside Satcher and Tatum.
