The country singer revealed that an intense combination of dieting and exercise left her malnourished in 2019.
Shania Twain has revealed that she once engaged in what she now considers “very unhealthy” behaviors in an effort to control her weight, though she says menopause has ultimately had a positive impact on how she sees herself.
The 60-year-old country music star spoke candidly about her body image during an interview with The Times, published on June 13. She reflected on a difficult period in 2019, when she was performing her Las Vegas residency and struggled deeply with her appearance.
Twain admitted that at the time she avoided looking in mirrors altogether because she felt unhappy with the changes in her body.
She explained that aging brought noticeable physical changes, and her usual routines no longer seemed effective. She described experiencing bloating and a sense of losing control over her weight, saying she could no longer easily shed pounds the way she once could.
Looking back, Twain acknowledged that she pushed herself too hard physically while not properly nourishing her body. She said her strict approach to staying thin eventually led to malnourishment and worsened a performance-related injury.
Now, however, her mindset has shifted significantly. Twain said she no longer avoids mirrors and instead embraces seeing herself as she is, even joking that she is more comfortable looking at herself than ever before.
She credited much of this change to menopause, explaining that it has helped her accept aspects of life and aging that cannot be controlled.
This isn’t the first time the five-time Grammy winner has spoken openly about body acceptance. In 2023, she also discussed posing nude for the cover of her album Queen of Me, saying she had grown more confident and comfortable in her own skin despite previously struggling with self-image.
