On Monday, May 5, Kacey Musgraves and Miranda Lambert gave the first live performance of their song “Horses and Divorces.”
Miranda Lambert recently reflected on reconnecting with Kacey Musgraves after years of tension between them.
During a May 15 interview with SiriusXM’s The Highway, Lambert described their live performance of “Horses and Divorces” at Gruene Hall as emotional and unforgettable. She shared that the atmosphere felt “electric” and said the moment helped heal old wounds between the two artists.
Lambert explained that when Musgraves invited her to surprise the audience during one of her shows, she immediately agreed. According to Lambert, performing together again reminded her of their long history and deep connection as fellow East Texas musicians.
The country singer also spoke about how close their families had become over the years. She recalled childhood memories of singing karaoke together and said their friendship goes back to when Musgraves was around 10 years old and Lambert was 14.
Reflecting on their renewed bond, Lambert said putting past disagreements behind them felt meaningful, describing the experience as a “whiskey under the bridge” moment.
Their collaboration “Horses and Divorces” appears on Musgraves’ album Middle of Nowhere. Earlier this year, Musgraves also discussed their past fallout in an interview with NPR, explaining that tensions began after Lambert recorded “Mama’s Broken Heart” for her 2013 album Four the Record, even though Musgraves had originally hoped to release the song herself.
Kacey Musgraves explained that “Mama’s Broken Heart” was reportedly offered to Miranda Lambert without her awareness or approval, which eventually created a complicated situation between them.
Musgraves shared that Lambert strongly connected with the song and wanted to record it, but because other songwriters were also involved, she had to weigh everyone’s interests carefully. Over time, Musgraves said she learned to move forward from the disagreement and felt the outcome worked out positively for everyone involved. She ultimately released “Merry Go ’Round” as her debut single instead.
The singer also reflected on collaborating with Lambert again for “Horses and Divorces,” describing the experience as a meaningful full-circle moment in both their personal and musical journeys.
