Miranda Lambert shared that she and Chris Stapleton tapped into the spirit of Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton while recording their latest duet, “A…”

Miranda Lambert says she and Chris Stapleton drew inspiration from legendary duo Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton for their new duet, “A Song To Sing.”
The newly released track uses music as a symbol for love, blending heartfelt lyrics with a smooth, disco-influenced rhythm that sets it apart from the typical fare on country radio.
In a recent chat with Cody Alan on SiriusXM’s The Highway, Lambert shared the story behind the song’s creation, revealing that she co-wrote it several years ago alongside Stapleton, Jesse Frasure, and Jenee Fleenor.
“I had a writing session with Jesse Frasure, and kind of on a whim, he texted Chris to see if he was around,” Lambert recalled. “It was a last-minute thing—he said, ‘Hey, Miranda and I are just writing for fun. Any chance you’re free today?’”
Lambert credited Frasure for encouraging her to step outside her usual style, noting that Stapleton responded quickly and came over to join the session.
“Chris happened to be available, so he dropped by. Jenee Fleenor—who’s an incredible fiddle player—had worked on a track with Jesse ahead of time that had this funky ’70s groove,” she explained. “She wasn’t in the room that day, but the parts she contributed really helped shape the vibe.”
They ended up writing two songs during that session, but according to Lambert, “A Song To Sing” sat on the shelf for a while.
“It just kind of lingered,” she said. “We weren’t sure where it belonged or what project it would fit into—it just wasn’t the right time. Until now.”
The track finally found its place, and Lambert and Stapleton traveled to Savannah, Georgia, last year to record it with producer Dave Cobb.
“I got to spend a few days in Savannah with the Stapletons, sipping wine and making music,” Lambert said. “We really leaned into that whole Kenny and Dolly vibe—it was a blast.”
Lambert shared that the legendary duo’s influence even made its way into their group chat.
“We had so much fun with it,” she said. “Our group text was full of Kenny and Dolly memes. We were all in—we wanted to capture that energy and honor our musical heroes, and I think we really pulled it off.”
