The country artist has a son with her former partner, Ryan Hurd.

Maren Morris’ son has influenced a lot of his mom’s music — including one song in particular.
While speaking to PEOPLE at the 2025 GLAAD Awards, the country singer, 34, was asked whether her 5-year-old son Hayes ever inspires or influences her music. Morris, who shares her son with ex-husband Ryan Hurd, said he “definitely” does.
“I mean, he definitely inspired my song ‘Because of Course’ which was on my EP,” says Morris, who will release her fourth studio album Dreamsicle on May 9. “And I mean, whether the song is about him or not, these songs are all written after his existence. So whether I know it or not or intend it or not, he’s got something different about me now.”
“I believe it’s beautiful, and I’ve definitely been changed for the better,” she adds. “It’s a new chapter in my life since I’m single, dating, a mother, and hopefully gearing up to tour this album soon. I’m just keeping myself busy.”
Morris also shared that it’s “amazing” for her son to witness both of his parents pursuing their passions.
“He joins me on the road and absolutely loves it. At 5, he’s starting to understand what’s going on,” the proud mother tells PEOPLE.
Morris has previously mentioned that she often writes songs with her son in mind. While attending the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of the animated film The Wild Robot, she revealed that some of the songs for the movie were written specifically for Hayes.
“My son has probably watched the trailer on my phone about 80 times,” she shared with PEOPLE. “He thinks it’s the actual movie.”
The singer of “The Middle” went on to explain the analogy she used to help her son understand what a movie trailer is. “I told him, ‘This is like the appetizer to the movie,’ trying to explain it to a 4-year-old.”
“But he’s so proud because he’s making the connection that I’m singing in it,” she continued. “I definitely wrote these two songs for the soundtrack with him in mind as his mom.”
