Carrie Underwood also reflected on the impact of helping aspiring musicians achieve their dreams during the Wednesday, March 5 episode of Good Morning America.

Luke Bryan had a surprising American Idol lesson for Carrie Underwood.

During the Wednesday, March 5 episode of Good Morning America, the Country Girl singer, 48, revealed that he introduced Underwood, 41, to a helpful audition trick on the show.

“Early in the tapings, Carrie didn’t know that you could start telling the contestants what to sing,” Bryan shared. “I was like, ‘Sing Happy Birthday, sing this,’ and Carrie’s like, ‘We can do that?’”

He explained that this strategy allows judges to see a contestant’s full potential, even if the other panelists aren’t initially convinced. “The fun part about that is when you really see something magical in a kid and the other two judges may not, but you can really take ownership of this one particular contestant.”

Bryan added that Underwood had already started using the trick this season.

Bryan noted that he and fellow judge Lionel Richie had used this technique in past seasons.

“It’s really fun when you feel a connection with a contestant and can start cheering them on, helping them navigate the competition in ways you think will benefit them,” he explained. “Watching Carrie learn things like that has been great, and we’re just having a blast with the talent this year. It’s really awesome.”

Reflecting on her American Idol journey, Underwood admitted that the 20 years since her win have “flown by.”

“It doesn’t feel like it, but it’s really cool to be on the other side of things,” she said. “Hopefully, we can impart some knowledge and help people make their dreams come true. Getting to play music and sing is wonderful, and if we can help one person—or many—achieve that, it’s amazing.”
