Wilson exclaimed that her parents would hardly believe what just happened.
When she was 18 years old, Lainey Wilson wrote a heartfelt letter to fellow Louisiana native Tim McGraw in hopes of receiving guidance as she pursued a career in music. At the time, however, the message never received a response.
Although she did not get the advice she was seeking back then, Wilson went on to carve out a successful path in country music. Years later, the story came full circle when she finally met McGraw for the first time and received a long-awaited reply.
The original handwritten letter has since become part of an exhibit at Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame. In it, a young Wilson introduced herself as an aspiring songwriter from Franklin Parish, Louisiana, and shared her early ambitions while studying at Louisiana Delta Community College. She explained that she had been writing songs since childhood and included a sample of her work, expressing confidence in her talent and a strong desire for an opportunity to be heard.
In the letter, she respectfully asked McGraw to consider meeting with her and her family, emphasizing that singing, writing, and performing were central to her life and that she simply needed a chance to prove herself.
The emotional story was later featured in her Netflix documentary Lainey Wilson: Keepin’ Country Cool, where fans heard her read the letter aloud.
For years, Wilson never had the opportunity to meet McGraw or share the significance of that message. That changed on June 6, when the two finally came face-to-face during rehearsals at Nissan Stadium ahead of CMA Fest. The meeting occurred just before they surprised fans with a duet later that night.
A behind-the-scenes video captured Wilson’s emotional reaction as she realized she was about to meet one of her biggest inspirations. She joked about growing up idolizing him and even creating dance routines to his songs.
On stage, the moment turned emotional as McGraw greeted her with a hug and admitted he had only recently learned about the letter. The two then reflected on their shared Louisiana roots, with Wilson revealing that his music was the first she ever saw live in concert.
The reunion culminated in a special performance at CMA Fest, where Wilson joined McGraw to sing his 1995 hit “I Like It, I Love It,” marking a full-circle moment in her journey from aspiring artist to country music star.
