Kelly Clarkson’s divorce from her husband, Brandon Blackstock, in 2020 brought significant changes to her life, leading to her decision to relocate to New York City after a period in Montana, where she owns a horse ranch. This shift also impacted her roles in both her talk show and as a coach on The Voice, resulting in her departure from the latter.
Clarkson had been a coach on several seasons of The Voice, including those during and after her divorce. In an interview with USA Today, she candidly revealed the challenges she faced, stating that it was tough to maintain a cheerful facade on camera while dealing with personal pain and heartbreak.
“Full disclosure, I put on a smile a lot of those times because I was struggling a lot in my personal life,” she explained. “I’ve learned a lot about what I’m capable of handling, and also what you should not handle. That was me saying ‘bye’ to The Voice and having this big move.”
Leaving the show was bittersweet for Clarkson, given the strong relationships she had formed with fellow coaches, including Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, and John Legend.
“I love that family, but I was like, ‘I’m struggling. I can’t smile anymore. I don’t feel like smiling,'” she admitted.
Despite initial doubts, she believed it was a necessary step. “I knew I needed a fresh start and couldn’t be in L.A. I really wanted to be in Montana, but you can’t really do a show from there quite yet. So I was like, ‘The only other option would probably be New York,'” Clarkson shared.
Over time, she realized that her decision was the right one, especially when she witnessed her family adapting well to their new home city.
“I genuinely love it, and I love that my kids love it,” she concluded.
