The country music star travels to Mexico for a cinematic romance that blends lush jungle scenery with a mysterious cowboy, a boa constrictor and plenty of sizzling chemistry.
Kacey Musgraves is transporting fans to Mexico in the newly released music video for her viral track, “Mexico Honey.”
The 37-year-old country star unveiled the cinematic visual on July 22, pairing the song’s dreamy lyrics with a romantic storyline set amid Mexico’s breathtaking scenery.
The video begins with the song’s title appearing in pink script before shifting to a close-up of Musgraves as she opens the track with the lyrics, “I’m in a bad girl good mood…”
Soon after, viewers are introduced to a mysterious cowboy who joins Musgraves on a road trip, setting the stage for the video’s central love story.
As the song progresses, the visuals move between a vibrant karaoke room and scenes inspired by classic telenovelas. Musgraves performs while her romantic counterpart watches, creating a blend of musical performance and cinematic storytelling.
Their relationship unfolds through a series of affectionate moments, including relaxing together at home, sharing quiet time in bed, exchanging kisses, and enjoying each other’s company throughout the house. The scenes accompany lyrics that celebrate the excitement and intensity of a passionate romance.
The setting later shifts to a tropical rainforest, where Musgraves walks through shallow water with a yellow boa constrictor draped across her shoulders. In another memorable shot, she poses artistically without clothing beside a brightly coloured parrot, adding to the video’s dreamlike aesthetic.
Interwoven throughout the visual are images of local wildlife, karaoke performances and emotional scenes that reflect the song’s longing to remain in Mexico and hold onto the romance it represents.
Toward the finale, the symbolism becomes more pronounced. Honey is poured over her love interest as a black panther silently observes from afar. The animal’s eyes gradually transform into those of the mysterious cowboy, blurring the line between danger and desire. Just as the panther appears ready to strike, the entire narrative suddenly rewinds, returning viewers to where the story began.
According to a press release, the video was filmed on location in Mexico and directed by Running Bear, the creative partnership of Alexa Stone and Stephen Kinigopoulos.
The release describes the visual as both a celebration of Mexico’s striking beauty and a reflection of the passion, memories and experiences that inspired Musgraves while spending time there.
