Miranda Lambert and Ella Langley may be among country music’s most prominent names, but their time together often leads to unexpected and humorous moments.
During ELLE’s Three Generations discussion, released on June 11 and also featuring Reba McEntire, the two artists reflected on their careers, songwriting experiences, mentorship, and the close friendship they have developed. The conversation also touched on broader themes in the industry, including the challenges women face in a male-dominated space and the importance of supporting one another creatively and professionally.
One of the standout stories came when Langley recalled an unusual writing session with Lambert that quickly turned into an impromptu encounter with wildlife. The pair had initially connected through mutual acquaintances and eventually began collaborating on music together. During one session, a discussion about Lambert’s past led to Langley learning about a surprising detail: the singer once owned a pet kangaroo.
Lambert laughed as she confirmed the story, explaining that she once drove around with several dogs in her backseat and a kangaroo riding up front, adding that such things felt fairly normal in her home state of Oklahoma. She also revealed that she was once pulled over while transporting the unusual mix of passengers, with the officer reportedly becoming so intrigued by the kangaroo that the situation quickly lost its seriousness.
That shared memory later helped inspire their song “Choosin’ Texas.”
The conversation took another entertaining turn when Langley described a more recent songwriting session at a farm. In the middle of working, she spotted a snake and attempted to catch it, only for Lambert to step outside holding a shotgun. Lambert quickly clarified that the situation was more playful than dangerous, joking that they were simply trying to “out-redneck” each other.
Fortunately, no harm came to the snake, as Langley managed to scare it away before things escalated. Lambert, slightly disappointed at missing her moment, jokingly told McEntire that Langley had ruined her chance.
The trio ended the moment in laughter, with Lambert even inviting McEntire to join them for a future writing session—though she promised it would be more relaxed next time, joking about skipping snakes and shotguns and keeping things low-key instead.
