Miranda Lambert may be a Grammy-winning country music star, but in her downtime, she explores a different kind of creativity — sort of.

In a recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Lambert opened up about one of her more unexpected hobbies: painting folk art chickens. She admitted she’s not exactly skilled at it, but that doesn’t stop her from enjoying the process.

“Even if you’re not good at something — or you try a bunch of things and you kind of stink at all of them — there’s still fulfillment in the effort,” she said during the Oct. 29 episode. “I paint these little folk art chickens, and I’m awful at it. I don’t even know why I do it. They’re really not good at all.”

Folk art takes many different forms, but according to the Museum of International Folk Art, it’s defined as artwork that is “handmade, traditional, and of, by, and for the people.” It can be taught either formally or informally and is often recognized for its vivid colors and imaginative, whimsical style.

Lambert, 41, shared that she paints chickens on small canvases. Although she admits she doesn’t know much about authentic folk art, she’s drawn to it simply because it’s “cute and fun.”

“I’m not showing anyone,” she said with a laugh. “I painted one for my mom [Beverly] because she has to hang it up — it’s in her kitchen now. I’m terrible at it and don’t know much about it, but I’d like to learn. I even watch YouTube tutorials. They’re just so cute.”

The “Mama’s Broken Heart” singer added that her husband, Brendan McLoughlin, was probably cringing when she brought up her folk art chickens on Rogan’s podcast.

“He’s like, ‘Are you seriously talking about those ridiculous chickens?’” Lambert recalled. “He’ll be in the kitchen cooking, and I’ll just be like, ‘I’m painting my chickens right now.’”

Lambert and McLoughlin, 34, were married in January 2019. Earlier this month, she celebrated his birthday with a heartfelt Instagram tribute, writing, “Happy birthday to my city-gone-country and honorary Texan husband @brendanjmcloughlin. Lover of sunshine, family, friends, the kitchen, pasta, hot dogs, travel, animals, and all things fun. You’re the best. 34 looks great on you! I love you.”
