Keith Urban Reflects on His Early ‘Playgirl’ Photoshoot: ‘Thankfully, I Play Guitar and Not the Harmonica’

The Australian country star struck a pose for the magazine back in 2001.

Keith Urban embraced his heartthrob image early in his career, even doing a photoshoot for Playgirl. During a live recording of Literally! With Rob Lowe on SiriusXM, Urban and Lowe shared a laugh about the daring photoshoot.

“I had no idea that magazine existed!” the 56-year-old country star joked, prompting a surprised response from host Rob Lowe, 60, who replied, “Hold on, Mr. Urban. We know you’re from Australia.”

The “Somebody Like You” singer explained that he was well aware of Playboy, to which Lowe playfully responded, “It’s equal titillation.”

Urban then went on to share the straightforward story behind the nearly forgotten photoshoot.

“It was someone at my record label who suggested, ‘Hey, we can get a feature in Playgirl, and they’ll write a long, nice piece about the album,'” Urban recalled. “I thought, ‘Great,’ and then they mentioned a photoshoot, and I was like, ‘Oh, okay.'”

Instead of focusing on being caught off guard by the photoshoot, Urban took it in stride, humorously telling Lowe, “Thankfully, I play guitar and not harmonica.”

During the interview, the “Blue Ain’t Your Color” singer also opened up about writing love songs, clarifying that not everything is inspired by his A-list wife, Nicole Kidman. “People assume everything I write is about her, and while, of course, many things are, not everything is,” Urban shared.

The Australian country singer released his self-titled debut album in 1991, and a year later, he relocated to Nashville, inspired by his father’s love for country music. His second self-titled album—and his first released in America—came out in 1999. Since then, Urban has earned multiple Grammy Awards, numerous ACAs, and even received a Golden Globe nomination for his original song “For You,” featured in Act of Valor.

Urban met Nicole Kidman in 2005, and the two married in 2006. They have two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret. Kidman, 57, also has two children, Bella and Connor, from her previous marriage to Tom Cruise.
