Jelly Roll is eager to make a return to the Emmys! Speaking with PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly on the Red Carpet Live show before the 2024 Emmy Awards on September 15, the 39-year-old musician expressed his desire to join a TV series so he can attend the awards regularly, calling his first experience at the show “the coolest.”
He said, “It’s crazy, man. I want to be in a TV show now so I can come here every year. I’m reaching out to all my country music friends and saying, ‘We’re missing the mark, we need to be at the Emmys.’”
The country artist and rapper, whose real name is Jason Bradley DeFord, also mentioned that he felt “honored” to be asked to perform during Sunday’s In Memoriam segment.
“It’s an honor because tonight I’ve been chosen to pay tribute to some of the greatest storytellers in the industry,” Jelly Roll told Entertainment Weekly’s Editor-in-Chief Patrick Gomez and PEOPLE’s Editor at Large Janine Rubenstein. “As a storyteller myself, I think it’s really special that we’re using music to honor these individuals in a room full of storytellers.”
He continued, “That’s what music is truly about, right? Music is medicine. I hope that someone watching tonight’s program finds comfort or help from it.”
Jelly Roll, currently on tour across the country, shared that one of the most common questions he received on the red carpet was about his wife of eight years, Bunnie Xo.
“I hope you’re watching this, momma—on the red carpet, the most frequent question has been ‘Where is your wife?’” he explained. “We’re in the midst of a tour right now; we played in New Orleans last night and will be in Orlando in the next day or two. She took the day to be with family and take them to the beach while I’m away. I told her that God had a little side quest for me, so I had to come to L.A. and do this.”
