Jason Aldean: The Career-Altering Choice That Ruffled My Record Label’s Feathers

Jason Aldean’s new album, “Highway Desperado,” is marked by a focus on songwriting, with the artist selecting only three songs he felt captured his essence from the many pitched to him by close friends and collaborators. His inner circle, including bandmates Kurt Allison and Tully Kennedy, played a significant role in crafting 12 of the 14 new songs. The album’s title track, “Highway Desperado,” reflects Aldean’s life as a traveling musician, constantly on the move.

Aldean’s success is partly attributed to his decision to maintain a small and strong circle of confidants. In an interview with Taste of Country Nights, he discusses raising his children in 2023, his role models like Toby Keith, and his dwindling patience for those who criticize him, his family, or his music.

When asked about writing three songs on the album, Aldean expresses confidence in his songwriting abilities. He mentions that he’s always been his harshest critic but decided to embrace songwriting again after some encouragement from band members.

The title track, “Highway Desperado,” was initially created as the name for his tour, but it evolved into a song during the creative process.

The song “Let Your Boys Be Country” carries a message of letting kids be kids, with Aldean discussing how it relates to his own experience as a parent, raising his 5-year-old son in today’s world. The song reflects the idea of allowing children to grow up naturally and learn life’s lessons.
