“Gwyneth Paltrow Teams Up with Holly Williams for Unexpected Performance at Grand Ole Opry Centennial: ‘Can You Believe It?’”

“The Academy Award-winning actress performed two of Holly Williams’ original songs alongside the singer-songwriter and her husband, Chris Coleman.”

The Grand Ole Opry celebrated its 100th anniversary with memorable performances from country music stars—and surprise appearances, including Gwyneth Paltrow.

The 53-year-old Oscar-winning actress delighted fans on Thursday, Nov. 20, in Nashville when she joined Holly Williams and Williams’ husband, musician Chris Coleman, on stage.

Williams, 44, welcomed Paltrow with excitement, saying, “Can y’all believe your luck? Y’all are used to Nashville guests, but not Hollywood Oscar winners.” Together, the trio performed Williams’ 2013 track “Drinkin’.”

After the performance, Williams playfully commented, “Can you believe it? Isn’t it annoying how they can do everything and still look amazing?”

She also shared that she had the “great honor of meeting” Paltrow years ago, and was immediately struck by what she called the actress’s “secret voice.”

The performance continued with “Waiting on June,” a song inspired by Williams’ maternal grandparents, who were farmers in Mer Rouge, Louisiana, and taught her life lessons about what truly matters.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Holly Williams share a long-standing connection.

Paltrow, who portrayed a country singer and performed in the 2010 film Country Strong, made her live television debut at that year’s CMA Awards. During interviews about the film, she highlighted Williams—granddaughter of country music legend Hank Williams—as one of her favorite contemporary country artists.

“I’ve always loved Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton, and newer artists like Miranda Lambert and Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum,” Paltrow told The Boot in 2012. “But Holly Williams’ music really resonates with me. I love that older, soulful style of country where you can feel the pain in a woman’s voice—that’s what really connects with me.”

The two have maintained a close friendship over the years. In 2020, Williams described their bond as a “mom-friend” connection. Williams and her husband Chris Coleman are parents to Stella June, Lillie Mae, Arlo, and Georgia Grace, while Paltrow shares Apple, 21, and Moses, 19, with ex-husband Chris Martin of Coldplay.

Williams told PEOPLE at the time, “We became friends four or five years ago and even did a summer beach trip together. Gwyneth had these chalkboards with the kids’ names and a points system—it was brilliant, and I hope to try it myself. I’m lucky to have friends like Gwyneth and other women who are patient with their children, and I was lucky to have a patient, loving mom. That’s been wonderful for me.”
