Cody Johnson and Jelly Roll: Uniting Through Mutual Respect and Shared Experiences

Country artist Cody Johnson has expressed his interest in collaborating with Jelly Roll, despite the apparent differences between their appearances and backgrounds. Johnson believes that respect is reciprocal, and genuine individuals recognize authenticity in one another. Backstage at CMA Fest, Johnson revealed that he and Jelly Roll have discussed the possibility of working together.

Johnson understands that his clean-cut Texas cowboy image may lead people to underestimate his past. However, he emphasized that he has a history with his fair share of challenges. He admitted to having made mistakes and facing pivotal decisions in his life, where he had to choose between pursuing his professional dreams with a positive mindset or potentially facing a different path, including incarceration.

Rather than ending up in jail, Johnson took a different route and worked as a prison guard. He revealed that he has a deep understanding of incarceration, sharing a common ground with Jelly Roll, who has served time in prison. Johnson acknowledged the pressures they both face, including striving to be the best partner, father, leader, and performer. They connect over the shared burden of self-imposed expectations and the simultaneous blessings and challenges that come with it.

Cody Johnson finds a relatable connection with Jelly Roll, considering it as a potential “opposites attract” scenario. While a collaboration with Jelly Roll is still in the works, Johnson has already shared exciting news about recording a duet with Carrie Underwood for his upcoming double album titled “Leather.”

During an interview with Audacy’s KMLE Country 107.9, Johnson expressed his enthusiasm for the 24 songs he recorded for “Leather,” stating that they are his favorite collection of songs thus far. He aims for each album to surpass the previous one and described the theme of the new album as being focused on fun. Regardless of whether it’s a ballad or a lighthearted track, Johnson wants the songs to evoke a sense of enjoyment and make listeners want to groove and nod their heads.

In addition to the collaboration with Carrie Underwood, Johnson sparked excitement among fans as he joined Reba McEntire on stage at CMA Fest to perform a rendition of “Whoever’s In New England,” generating buzz and discussion among his followers.
