Riley Green Talks About Embracing His ‘Mustache Guy’ Image and How It May Give Him an Edge on The Voice

Green says his signature mustache was never really planned, explaining that it happened almost by accident.

Riley Green never set out to make a mustache his signature feature, but an ordinary experiment with facial hair eventually became one of the country singer’s most recognizable trademarks.

During a recent appearance on the TODAY Show, Green discussed the unexpected origins of his now-famous mustache and how fans have embraced the look.

“[The] mustache for me was somewhat of an accident,” he admitted. Green explained that, like many men, he went through a period of experimenting with different facial-hair styles, including a goatee and a mustache. Eventually, the mustache remained — and fans turned it into something much bigger.

“It just stuck. And now it’s a whole thing,” he said.

The singer has since noticed just how much the mustache has become part of his identity. At his concerts, Green regularly spots fans sporting both genuine and fake mustaches as a playful tribute to his signature appearance.

“I didn’t know I was going to be the mustache guy, but here I am,” he added.

What began as an accidental style choice could now prove useful in Green’s newest career venture. The Alabama native is joining Season 30 of The Voice as one of the coaches, and he joked that his combination of a cowboy hat and mustache might give him an advantage when competing for country singers.

“I’m the only one with a cowboy hat, so I think that’d be my way to get, especially those country acts…Mustache also helps,” Green said.

Green also revealed which fellow coach he expects to be his biggest challenge when it comes to attracting country performers. For him, Kelly Clarkson stands out as a particularly strong competitor.

“It’s tough because…Adam [Levine’s] been there forever. Queen Latifah is very, very famous. I think probably Kelly Clarkson. She’s going to try to get some of my country acts on the show I know.”

As Green settles into his role on the singing competition, he has already had plenty of memorable moments behind the scenes.

Asked about the funniest part of filming so far, Green immediately mentioned host Carson Daly and the laughs he has provided backstage.

“Carson’s had some funny moments backstage,” Green said. He also pointed to the coaches’ collaborative musical performance as another highlight, particularly the creative process involved in choosing the song.

“We all do a song together. That creatively has been a lot of fun,” he added.
