Kelly Clarkson recently opened up about her memories of country music legend Dolly Parton during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers.
The singer and television personality joined Seth Meyers as she promoted her upcoming return to The Voice for its 30th season. While discussing the long-running singing competition, the conversation eventually turned to Parton, giving Clarkson an opportunity to reflect on the impact the country icon had on her.
Clarkson remembered being a young girl growing up in Texas and hearing Parton’s unmistakable voice. She said the sound immediately stood out to her, describing it as so distinctive that Parton seemed almost larger than life.
For Clarkson, Parton possessed a rare quality that made her voice instantly identifiable. She explained that listening to her sometimes felt like watching a performer who had stepped out of a movie, even though she was simply being herself.
Beyond her vocal talent, Clarkson praised Parton’s abilities as a songwriter. She admired the honesty and authenticity that came through in Parton’s music and also recognized the challenges Parton faced while building her career as a woman in the music business during an era when the industry offered women far fewer opportunities.
Clarkson said hearing stories about Parton’s experiences gave her an even greater appreciation for everything the country star accomplished throughout her career.
The former American Idol winner also recalled the personal encounters she shared with Parton over the years. One quality that particularly stayed with Clarkson was Parton’s ability to make people feel comfortable and genuinely acknowledged, regardless of the circumstances.
Clarkson remembered one particularly meaningful conversation with Parton at a major event. Despite the busy setting and the fact that she had no obligation to do so, Parton took the time to speak with Clarkson warmly and make her feel important.
The experience left Clarkson with a lesson she wanted to carry into her own life. She said Parton’s kindness reminded her to be more intentional about making other people feel comfortable, heard and valued.
Clarkson has also paid tribute to Parton through her music on several occasions. Most recently, she performed Parton’s classic “I Will Always Love You” during a private event for Coca-Cola employees. Clarkson previously delivered the song at the 57th Annual ACM Awards, adding her own powerful interpretation to one of Parton’s most celebrated compositions.
