The country singer drew from personal experiences to bring the song and music video to life.
Alexandra Kay is bringing a personal story to life with the brand new music video for her current single, “I Hate Airplanes.”
Directed by Jordan Phoenix and shot in her home state of Missouri, this clip finds Kay in the midst of a long-distance relationship and longing to spend more time with the one she loves. She finds herself experiencing the heartbreak that comes with having to say goodbye over and over to that special someone, who is always getting ready to leave and packing up his bags to head to the airport.
By the chorus, Alexandra Kay is throwing all her heart and soul into the performance, sharing the torment of long-distance love while appearing in front of a real-life airplane that’s on the ground surrounded by billows of smoke.
“When there’s a 737 on the runway / Just begging to break my heart / And every ticket feels like a one way / To ten million miles apart / Oh, those wheels up in the air / They don’t even care / About the tears rollin’ down my face / They’re always takin’ off / Always takin’ you away / I hate airplanes,” Kay belts out the highly relatable lyrics of the chorus as scenes flash back and forth between her with her significant other and her alone in a field amid an airplane.
Alexandra Kay opened up about filming the video with her team near her hometown, telling Country Now that, “I was planning on going back home to visit my parents, and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh! This is perfect.’ My photographer lives in the St. Louis area, so it’s like a hometown affair when it comes to my team. Jordan, he was like, ‘I would love to shoot the video.’ So, we came to St. Louis, and he told me about this paintball facility out in Bridgeton, Missouri. He said, ‘We’re going to go out there. They have an airplane out there. We’re just going to do all the movie magic and make it look like we blew it up.’ I was like, ‘Yes! Let’s do it!’ So that was really cool!”
“My parents came out, and my best friend came out. Everybody I love was on set that day, and it was wonderful,” Alexandra Kay added. “I’m so excited for everyone to see it. Jordan is an incredible director. His vision was amazing, and it truly did come to life.”
